About The Band
The Marshall Municipal Band is one of the oldest tax-supported bands in the state of Missouri. Records indicate that organized band music in Marshall dates back to around 1871, shortly after the Civil War. The Marshall Municipal Band was officially organized in 1921 and has continuously performed since that time.
The late E.J. Eckles holds the longest tenure for serving as director. After serving in World War I, Eckles entered the Army Band School in Washington, D.C., and was assigned to the official United States Army Band. When he returned to Marshall, he was employed for a number of years at the Auditorium Theater) as a member of the orchestra, playing saxophone and drums during the era of silent films. Eckles became the Municipal Band Director in 1933, holding that position until his death in June of 1965.
